Meaning: An extremely disastrous or chaotic situation

Think of the phrase ‘dumpster fire’, and you’ll get the meaning of the phrase right away: a great pile of worthless garbage, burning away dangerously. Basically a useless, hopeless situation, with no merit whatsoever, that is a hazard to everything around it. And because the words ‘terrible’, ‘horrible’, ‘catastrophic’ and ‘complete disaster’ are sometimes not enough to really show how much you feel about something 😛

It has been pops up every now and then over the years, but it became one of the biggest catchphrases of 2016. The American Dialect Society even awarded it the title of 2016’s Word of the Year.

It’s been used to describe everything from bad movies to football matches to the 2016 US presidential election to the sucky world events of 2016 in general.
